What to Expect at Your First Driftless Health Visit

Driftless Health 1st Visit

Starting care somewhere new can feel like a big step. At Driftless Health, we want your first visit to feel calm, clear, and useful.

Our approach is built around listening, understanding the full picture, and helping each person take practical next steps. Whether you are coming in for a specific health concern, a wellness visit, functional and integrative medicine support, or to establish long-term care, your first visit is meant to help us understand where you are starting from and what matters most to you.

Establishing the Right Care Relationship

Depending on your healthcare needs, Driftless Health may serve as your primary healthcare provider, support your functional and integrative medicine, wellness, and prevention goals, or help bring these pieces together into a thoughtful care plan.

Some patients are looking for a primary care home. Others may already have a provider they know and trust but are looking for additional support with wellness, prevention, nutrition, lifestyle, or care informed by functional and integrative medicine. In either case, our goal is the same: to be a partner in your healthcare.  We believe care should be collaborative, not one-sided. That means taking time to understand your concerns, your goals, and what kind of support feels most helpful to you. Together, we can establish the care relationship that best fits your needs and supports your overall health.

For patients wishing to establish long-term care with Driftless Health as their primary care option, the first step is a 60-minute new-patient intake visit. This gives us time to review your health history, medications, concerns, goals, and the bigger picture of your health. When a visit is scheduled for 60 minutes, that means a full 60 minutes dedicated to your health concerns, questions, and next steps.

Direct Care, Payment, and Preparing for Your Visit

Driftless Health is a cash-pay, direct care practice. We do not bill or accept insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid, for payment. Before care begins, patients receive clear information about visit costs, payment expectations, and required forms.

A deposit is required before your appointment to reserve your visit time. Your scheduled appointment is intentionally protected time set aside for you. Outside services, such as labs, imaging, specialty referrals, medications, supplements, or services provided by other organizations, may have separate costs. We will talk through those options when they are relevant so you can make informed decisions.

Before your first visit, intake forms are completed online through our secure electronic health record and patient portal. These forms ask about your health history, medications, supplements, allergies, past medical concerns, family history, lifestyle, and goals. Completing them before your visit helps us use your appointment time well and allows the visit to focus more on conversation, questions, planning, and next steps.

It can also be helpful to upload or bring recent lab results, imaging reports, medication lists, supplement lists, or notes from prior care when available. You do not need to have everything perfectly organized. The goal is simply to gather what we can and begin building a clearer picture.

What Happens During the Visit

Your first visit is a chance to slow down and talk through your story. We will review your main concerns, health history, current symptoms, medications, goals, and any questions you may have. Depending on the reason for the visit, this may also include a physical exam, review of prior records, discussion of labs, or planning for additional testing when appropriate.

At Driftless Health, we bring together primary care, wellness, prevention, and functional and integrative medicine-informed thinking. That means we look at what needs attention now, while also considering the bigger picture. Sleep, stress, nutrition, digestion, movement, metabolism, hormones, mood, inflammation, and daily routines can all play a role in health and well-being.

For patients in our Driftless region, health is often shaped by real-life factors: family, work, stress, sleep, nutrition, movement, access, routines, and the pace of daily life. Those pieces matter, and they are part of the conversation.  The goal is not to make the visit overwhelming. The goal is to understand what is going on, talk through reasonable options, and begin creating a plan that feels practical.

After the Visit and Staying Connected

After your visit, you should have a clearer understanding of what was discussed and what comes next. This may include a care plan, lab orders, referrals, lifestyle recommendations, follow-up timing, or additional resources.

Sometimes the next step may be simple. Other times, it may involve labs, referrals, follow-up visits, lifestyle changes, medication discussion, or a more comprehensive wellness plan. We will talk through what seems most important, what can wait, and what feels realistic based on your needs and goals.  Depending on your intake forms, health needs, and clinical situation, some care may be available through telehealth when appropriate. Some concerns are best evaluated in person, while others can be safely and thoughtfully addressed virtually.

Driftless Health also uses secure electronic communication through the patient portal. The portal may be used for forms, updates, non-urgent messages, care plans, and follow-up communication. For urgent symptoms, emergencies, or time-sensitive medical concerns, patients should seek urgent or emergency care rather than using portal messaging.

For some patients, the first visit is the beginning of ongoing primary care. For others, it may be a focused visit to address a specific concern or support a wellness, functional, and integrative care plan. Either way, our goal is to help you leave feeling heard, supported, and better equipped to move forward.

Healthcare should not feel rushed or one-sided. At Driftless Health, your first visit is about starting a partnership. We take time to listen, understand, and build a plan with you.

That is where good care begins.
